Beacon to provide live coverage of Monday’s “Day of Public Outrage” demonstrations

With the help of sister publication Abcug.hu, the Beacon will provide live English-language coverage of demonstrations scheduled to take place in Budapest and major provincial cities across Hungary Monday evening.

At a mass protest held in Budapest last Sunday (pictured), anti-corruption civil activists demanded the government formally ask the European Commission to conduct an independent audit of the National Tax and Duty Authority, and demanded the resignation of four senior tax authority officials, including its head, Ildikó Vida.

In light of their refusal to resign, organizers have scheduled a “Day of Public Outrage” for the evening of Monday, November 17. According to the event’s Facebook page, they will be protesting official corruption, overtaxation, the current direction of Hungary’s foreign policy and the idea of taxing the internet.  Simultaneous demonstrations are to be held in Budapest, Pécs, Szeged, Békécsaba, Miskolc and Győr. Beacon and Abcug correspondents will be live-tweeting text and photographs, as well as uploading short videos of the protests in real time.
