Businesses tied to two Fidesz politicians, János Lázár and Sándor Farkas, are among the list of top 500 subsidized agricultural businesses. Also on the list are businesses owned by Sándor Csányi, Lőrinc Mészáros and state secretary György Czerván. The list, which was compiled by Hungarian daily Blikk, showcases businesses that together have received more than USD 4 billion in direct agricultural subsidies in recent years.
Blikk writes that a company would have to receive at least HUF 963 million (USD 3.56 million) in agricultural subsidies to be included on the list. Businesses with close ties to several politicians can be found on it. The top 500 companies have received more than HUF 1089 billion (USD 4 billion) in national and EU agricultural subsidies over the past 7 years, that’s about two-thirds of the total agricultural subsidy payments released in Hungary.
In just the past two years Sándor Csányi and Lajos Simicska have raked in HUF 33.4 billion (USD 124 million) and HUF 42.8 billion (USD 158.5 million) in subsidies, respectively.
A company belonging to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s good friend Lőrinc Mészáros is also on the list. Mészáros acquired an interest in Aranykorona Mezőgazdasági Zrt. which received HUF 1.85 billion (USD 6.84 million) of subsidies between 2007 and 2015.
