Hungarian state media reported Wednesday that the Bálint Hóman Cultural Foundation has abandoned its plans to erect a statue to the wartime politician and notorious anti-semite. The foundation notified the city of Székesfehérvár of its decision in a letter. So ends the Hóman fiasco.

The foundation was given upwards of HUF 15 million by Hungary’s justice ministry and HUF 2 million by the city of Székesfehérvár for the creation of the statue.

The foundation’s plan to erect the statue generated domestic and international criticism.

“As for Viktor Orbán’s role in this affair, foreign papers may hail the fact that at last Viktor Orbán spoke out and distanced himself from the project. “Alas, not too many people outside of Hungary will ever know that the real culprit of this sickening story was Viktor Orbán himself” writes Éva S. Balogh of the Hungarian Spectrum.
