Hungarian news site hvg.hu reports construction of the fence along Hungary’s border with Serbia has started about 5 kilometers away from the town of Mórahalom.
The radical right-wing mayor of neighboring Ásotthalom, László Toroczkai, expressed his joy about the start of fence on Monday morning by posting on Facebook “It has begun! God bless the Hungarian army!” which is helping to build the 175 km long fence.
Toroczkai did not reveal any additional information about the fence but promised to inform his followers later in the day.
Sources have confirmed to hvg.hu that the “technical barrier” is being built about 5 kilometers from Mórahalom. Surrounding roads were cleared of debris last week in preparation for construction vehicles to haul materials and equipment to the area.
The Hungarian government has appropriated HUF 6.5 billion towards the construction of the fence.
