Hungary to feed hungry pre-schoolers from September

April 10, 2015

In the wake of Saturday’s near bread riot in Miskolc, the Minister in Charge of the Office of the Prime Minister, János Lázár, announced today that the government would introduce thrice daily feeding of children enrolled in public nursery schools and kindergartens in September.  He said the decision would affect 320,000 children.

It is not clear what arrangements, if any, will be made to feed the same children at the weekend or during school breaks.  In June of last year the European Union announced that it would supply Hungary with food parcels for distribution to poor families.

According to official statistics one in three children in Hungary today live in poverty.
