Almost everyone in the prime minister’s family is a businessman, reports Forbes Hungary reporter Gergő Zsiborás. The magazine recently published its list of the 33 richest Hungarians. While no members of the Orbán family made it onto the list, Zsiborás was able to use Hungarian corporate filings to determine just how vast the Orbán family’s Hungarian business interests are.
Orbán’s father, Győző, for example, owns a successful mining company that pulled in revenues of HUF 3.3 billion last year. The company’s after tax profits were HUF 1.1 billion.
Speaking on Story TV’s 7/24 show, Zsiborás said many of the people of the Forbes Hungary 33 richest list are great examples of successful individuals. But there are also some who have the Hungarian state to thank for their wealth. Forbes published a separate article entitled “The Felcsút Circle” (referring to Prime Minister Orbán’s hometown) showcasing some of these individuals. Among them is none other than the pipe-fitter turned Hungarian billionaire and Felcsút mayor Lőrinc Mészáros.
“The fact that I’ve made it to this point can surely be attributed to the roles played by God, luck and Viktor Orban, but I’ve never privatized, I’ve never embezzled and I’ve acquired everything with my own work and my own wits,” Mészáros told pro-government weekly Heti Valasz in 2014.
