Magyar Nemzet, Lánchíd Rádio to cease operations effective April 11th

Magyar Nemzet, Hungary’s largest and most important independent conservative newspaper, will appear for the last time tomorrow. The 80-year old print daily is closing its doors, according to a statement issued by its publisher, Nemzet Lap- és Könyvkiadó Kft.

“Due to financial problems, on the basis of the decision taken by the owners of Magyar Nemzet, the publisher will end its media content activity. In this way, the Magyar Nemzet daily and its online version, mno.hu will cease to exist.  The last printed edition of the Magyar Nemzet daily founded 80 years ago will appear on April 11th, 2018.”

Index reports that employees were informed of the owner’s decision at an editorial meeting at 10 am Tuesday.

Lánchíd Rádió Kft., the last independent commercial radio station to broadcast countrywide, simultaneously announced that it would cease broadcasting at midnight tonight.

“Due to financial problems, on the basis of the decision taken by the owners, the company will end its media service activities from April 11th.  In this way, the radio will cease broadcasting at midnight on April 10th, 2018,” reads the statement.

Index reports that for the time being there are no plans to close HírTV but its operations are to be “rationalized.”

The fate of conservative print weekly Heti Válasz is also unknown.  Index reports that the owner is seeking a new investor prepared to acquire the publication.
