Hódmezővásárhely’s newly-elected independent mayor Péter Márki-Zay (pictured) is calling on voters to back the opposition candidate most likely to defeat the Fidesz-KDNP candidate in each electoral district at the general election on April 8, reports Index.hu. He has even launched a website to show which candidates are strongest in a number of Hungary’s 106 electoral districts.

On Wednesday afternoon, representatives of a number of organizations – including Viszlát, kétharmad!, Common Country Movement, Számoljunk együtt, and 1 jelölt a változásért! – held a press conference to announce several more candidates that could potentially win their electoral districts.

According to Márki-Zay, his recent win in Hódmezővásárhely’s mayoral by-election is proof that the opposition can win even in Fidesz strongholds, because the majority of voters are tired of the corruption and being kept in a state of fear.

Márki-Zay also said he initially believed that three and half weeks would be enough for opposition parties to pull together and start coordinating, but he now realizes that this job has fallen to those not affiliated with parties.

He emphasized the need to name the most popular opposition candidate in each electoral district before the election. With the help of the organizations participating in the press conference, they have data to show which candidates have the best prospects in 53 of the 106 electoral districts. The group is encouraging Hungarians to vote for these candidates if they want to oust Fidesz, and to vote for the national list of a party of their choice.

Márki-Zay also encouraged voters to register on the website to receive an email newsletter to see which candidate is the most likely in their own electoral district.
