Daily online news portal index.hu posted a video today documenting Wednesday’s clash between Hungarian riot police and asylum seekers at the Röszke 2 border crossing.
The video is edited, with sections being filmed on both sides of the Hungarian-Serbian border. And it does not show what happened after crack units from Hungary’s counter-terrorism center (TEK) arrived on the scene.
It opens with several hundred asylum seekers standing in front of the border crossing gate, including women and children.
On the other side of the gate stands a phalanx of Hungarian riot police. At one point additional riot police move into position on the flanks.
An asylum seeker with a megaphone tries to persuade the Hungarian authorities to open the gate, telling them they only want to pass through Hungary. “Nobody will make any problem for your country. Nobody will make any problem for policemen.”
The crowd then starts chanting “open the gate!” At that point, a number of youths come up from the rear and push through the crowd. At some point two pieces of what appear to be concrete and a bottle of water are hurled over the gate onto the riot police as a young man kicks the gate.
The riot police respond by spraying the asylum seekers with what appear to be copious amounts of pepper spray.
The crowd recoils violently from the gate.
Shortly thereafter, the Hungarian authorities let loose with the water cannons, spraying anybody remaining in the area before the gate.
Apparently outraged over what has just happened, a number of youths begin to hurl pieces of concrete and other objects over the fence at the police.
Several riot police are then filmed passing around the gate into the no man’s land to engage though rock-throwing rocks and other objects.
Meanwhile, Serbian emergency workers treat asylum seekers, including children, for pepper spray and other wounds.
A Serbian policeman directs a group of young men away from the direction of the border crossing gate, telling them in English that buses are coming for them.
The video does not show what happened after crack Hungarian anti-terrorist units arrived.
