János Fülöp resigned in September over the xenophobic frenzy which consumed the Tolna county village.
Residents of Cserdi back Mayor Bogdán who vowed to host refugees rejected by Őcsény. Neighboring villages are not so enthusiastic though.
“I don’t want to live out the rest of my life with the guilt of knowing that I could have said something but didn’t,” Bojár says.
Despite the events of the last few weeks, residents of Őcsény would be glad if János Fülöp changed his mind and re-ran for mayor in December.
Fidesz VP Szilárd Németh doesn’t think Hungary is in a position to show humanity to refugees. He also thinks the events in Őcsény were a provocation.
According to János Lázár, the government can still care for refugees better than “some NGO with an uncertain background.”
