"Viktor Orbán has spit in the face of the gypsy community"

August 9, 2017

“Viktor Orbán, who is no longer proud that his origins place him among us, has not only spit in the face of the gypsy community, but also in that of several million Hungarians who have been forced into poverty.” – Open letter to Viktor Orbán on the part of 13 Roma (“gypsy”) organizations

The following is a translation an open letter to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán allegedly signed by 13 Hungarian Roma (“gypsy”) organizations published on the blog post civilhetes.hu on August 8.

Thirteen Roma organizations and associations wrote an open letter to Viktor Orbán, who they think has become a tyrant. In their letter they write that they will no longer assist Orbán in his gathering of power.

Dear Roma brothers and sisters!

We, the undersigned, have collectively and individually decided to express that we have had enough of the current Hungarian government, and especially of its leader, Viktor Orbán.

Few people know that in 1989 gypsy leaders of the time agreed that several people needed to be selected from among the Roma in order to work for the advancement of our people, since the situation and circumstances of the gypsy community were already extremely bad.

The most promising young person among them was Viktor Orbán, in whom the Roma leaders of the time saw the guardian of the ascension of the gypsy community. We were patient. In 1998 when Orbán became the prime minister, we felt that our time had come.

Several things happened which truly raised our hopes, but a true breakthrough never occurred. Neither the schooling of our children nor the material or health situation of our families really improved. Even so, we continued to hope, and we supported Fidesz with our votes at elections.

At such times they always dangled a carrot on a string in front of us, and Fidesz activists “motivated” our gypsy brothers and sisters with a few thousand forints of election money. Fidesz won again in 2010. And again, thanks to a lot of Roma votes, there was a little “gratuity money.”

Not even in our nightmares did we imagine what happened next. Hungary, and primarily the “countryside,” slipped into deep poverty in a very short time, which no one expected. Today, hunger, freezing to death, the spread of previously eliminated diseases, etc., have become the norm.

Our situation slowly became one of despair, and we lost everything, especially our hope. We don’t even have hope that our children will learn how to write, that our loved ones will grow old in health, or that we can acquire respectable work.

We must declare: Viktor Orbán, who is no longer proud that his origins place him among us, has not only spit in the face of the gypsy community, but also in that of several million Hungarians who have been forced into poverty.

Seeing now that he is exclusively interested in the enrichment of his own family, we must say that we don’t see him as our leader.  He has lost our trust and we in no way wish to help him remain in power in the future.

We hope that every Hungarian Roma will join our call, and with our help in 2018 the country can free itself from the once-broke Roma kid who became a tyrant.
